For those who may have missed the introductory sale a few months ago on Topaz Texture Effects, it’s back, and includes 42 new textures, and 15 new effects along with performance enhancements. Topaz has added to and updated the plugin, and is offering it for $20 off (available for $49.99, normally $69.99) through January 31st. Updatable for those who already own Texture Effects, downloadable for those interested in a full free trial, or for purchase on sale via the Topaz website HERE, and if purchasing, use code “EASYTEXTURE” to get the sale price at checkout.
I reviewed Texture Effects when it was released HERE, and have continued to use and enjoy it. Not an everyday plugin, but a great one if wanting to create a series of images, or enjoy adding some of that textured moodiness to an image or images. Like all Topaz plugins, it’s intuitive, fast and creatively powerful.

Hi all! Welcome to a new, recurring feature on the blog here. I’m partnering with Alien Skin software to work through the processing of images using their Exposure software. Alien Skin Exposure is one of the most complete software processing solutions that I use, and I just love it. With each new release, the functionality and depth become greater and more streamlined. Exposure X is in its final beta, and should be ready to go very soon. You can download a free trial of Exposure HERE if you’d like, and follow along with one of your own images as we explore what Exposure has to offer, together. (if you’re looking for a discount code, you can get 10% off any Alien Skin software using the code “tysonrobichaud” so have at it).
Using images submitted by readers, I will retouch, process and in general, just have fun playing around with them as I might one of my own images, sharing my process step by step along the way. I’ll be using Exposure X today (which may look a little different compared to the screenshots below, when finalized) to process a submitted image from my friend, Billyburg (see more from him on flickr here).
Without further ado…
I’ve reviewed ReMask a couple times before, and have spoken at length about how useful I find it. If you use any layer based software, like Photoshop, or Affinity, this is a remarkable piece of software capable of saving hours upon hours. ReMask5 is available as a free upgrade to anyone who owns an earlier version, or on sale for new folk at 30% off, $49.99 (normally $69.99) via Topaz Labs website HERE
While ReMask has always functioned as a plugin for Photoshop, version 5 now operates as a standalone too! This is great news for those of us who may be starting to work Adobe software out of our workflow as you can now select and mask a subject in an image within the program itself, and open that up in any layer based program. Good news for the photography community at large as options are always good. I still use PS CS6, but have started to work with Affinity Photo in anticipation of CS6 becoming unsupported at some point down the line. Knowing that I’ll be able to continue to use ReMask if and when that happens has made me very happy.
C’mon in for a look at how easy it is to use ReMask5!
I’ve slowly been crawling out from the pile of work I’ve created for myself and have gotten around to playing with MacPhun’s Focus 2 Pro. The beauty of this program is it’s ease and remarkably intuitive skill set. After playing with and reviewing Tonality Pro, I was very curious to see what else MacPhun had to offer. If you are a Mac OS user, have a look, download a trial and play around with this fun program. On sale through the 15th of March, you can download a free trial, or purchase it HERE. Normally $39.99, it is on sale for 25% off, or $29.99 for the next 10 days. Upgrades from Standard to Pro can be had for a mere $14.99 as well! Come on in to see some of what you get with Focus 2 Pro.
If I were to ask you, which black and white software do you feel is the best out right now, what would you say? NIK Silver Efex Pro? Alien Skin Exposure 6? OnOne Perfect B&W? Topaz B&W Effects? While I can, and would make arguments for a couple of these, I have to say that this question for Mac users just got a whole lot harder.
Alien Skin is a company focused on producing very high end and useful software plugins. Two of my favorites from Alien Skin have always been Exposure for the remarkable film emulation filters, and Bokeh for the focus control. Now, Alien Skin has chosen to merge both of these into one super plugin in Exposure 6. Continue reading
